Safespear focuses on the sharp end of safety in oil and gas sector

Member profile – Safespear’s primary objective is to ensure the safety of people.

Safespear is a Supply Nation registered, multi-disciplined and specialist service provider to the Australian oil and gas industry.

Safespear offers a range of specialist areas of operation including pressurised welding habitats, Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas (EEHA) inspection, EEHA rentals, oil country tubular goods (OCTG) inspection, Nondestructive testing (NDT), climate control and dehumidification services, lifting & rigging equipment and general plant & equipment rentals.

Safespear Chairman Barry McGuire said: “Our primary objective is to ensure the safety of people. We do this through innovation, design and supply of world-class safety solutions”.

Since its inception in 2019, Safespear has worked on projects across the North West Shelf and Northern Territory supporting many oil and gas majors.

Recently, Safespear was awarded a five-year contract to provide OCTG inspection services directly to a major operator, with the majority of work being conducted in Broome.

Last year, Safespear was involved the in the engineering, design and installation of specialised heat mitigation habitats on a major LNG facility, designed to allow work to be conducted in locations where temperatures often exceeded 80 degrees.

The project was a great success, allowing personnel to work in the comfort of our habitats with an average internal temperature of 24 degrees.

Mr McGuire said: “The diversity of these scopes highlights Safespear’s ability to conduct a wide range of work to fulfil client requirements.

With the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, Safespear recognised the capacity to effectively isolate a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case on remote sites and preventing transmission to other personnel is critical to operational safety and continuity.

Accordingly, Safespear has used its skills and expertise in the areas of pressurised environments and climate control to develop a new range of products designed to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19.

These products include the SafeRoom and SafePod.

The Safespear SafeRoom is an engineered risk management control used to quickly and simply convert existing accommodation rooms or on-site medical facilities into Class-N (Type 5) negative pressure isolation rooms (NPIRs) and help to protect medical staff and other personnel from COVID-19 aerosol transmission.

The SafePod is a portable negative pressure isolation chamber that allows infected patients to be transferred in a safe environment, protecting medical staff, vehicle operators, medivac pilots and other personnel from contact, droplet and aerosol transmission.

“Our ability to develop these products quickly within Australia, using local supply chains, underlines the capability we have to develop engineered solutions in differing circumstances, whether it be for oil and gas or other industries,” Mr McGuire said.
